Launch of ClimaNET accelerates intermunicipal collaboration on net zero goals

Six Greek and one Cypriot Climate-Neutral Mission Cities have officially launched ClimaNET, an intermunicipal and interregional platform that will facilitate collaboration and the sharing of information and resources as the seven cities move forward with actions to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.

The launch took place last week at the ‘Climate Neutrality and Resilient Athens: Green and blue (water) interventions in the city in the era of climate crisis’ conference in Athens.

“Cities are at the frontline of climate action, yet municipal projects often struggle to secure adequate funding and support,” commented BwB Vice President and City Finance Specialist, George Ioulianos. “The establishment of ClimaNET is a major milestone for the Mission Cities of Greece and Cyprus in their efforts to coordinate their actions, streamline the maturing and financing of their projects, and provide replicable examples of effective initiatives for other cities. In close collaboration with our NetZeroCities consortium partners, we ensure cities across Greece and Europe receive the advice and technical support required for achieving their net zero ambitions."

George was among the panellists for the ‘Investment needs to achieve climate neutrality - Economic tools to support the transition to Climate Neutrality’ session at the conference, during which he discussed the work of the Climate City Capital Hub and its role in assisting Mission Cities with their climate investment plans as part of the EU Cities Mission platform managed by NetZeroCities.

Congratulations to city mayors Haris Doukas (Athens), Stelios Angeloudis (Thessaloniki), Thanasis Vasilopoulos (Trikala), Thomas Begas (Ioannina), Ioannis Kokkaliaris (Kozani), Nikolaos Sakkas (Kalamata), Yannis Armeftis (Limassol) and their teams for bringing this important strategic initiative to fruition.

And many thanks to the city of Athens and Vice Mayor Nikos Chrysogelos for the wonderful hospitality!
